Grounding: connecting the system to earth
System grounding connects an electrical system to earth through a grounding electrode system. Its purposes include stabilizing voltage to ground and limiting voltage imposed by lightning, line surges or unintended contact with higher-voltage conductors.
Grounding electrodes can include qualifying metal underground water pipe, concrete-encased electrodes and ground rods or other electrodes as required by the installation. The complete electrode system matters; one visible rod is not the entire safety picture.
Bonding: creating an effective fault-current path
Bonding joins conductive parts so they remain at substantially the same potential and an electrical fault can return to the source through a low-impedance path. That current path helps a breaker or fuse open the circuit.
Examples include the service bonding connection, equipment grounding conductors, bonded metal enclosures and required metal-piping bonds. Loose connections or improper neutral-ground connections can defeat the intended arrangement.
Why the distinction matters in a real home
Adding a ground rod does not correct a missing equipment ground at an outlet. Replacing a two-prong receptacle with a three-prong device does not create a grounding path. Installing a GFCI can provide a permitted form of shock protection in certain replacement situations, but the circuit remains ungrounded unless a grounding conductor or other permitted path is present.
Likewise, bonding neutral and ground together in a subpanel can place normal return current on metal equipment paths. The correct connection point depends on the service and feeder arrangement.
Pool bonding is a specialized system
Pool equipotential bonding is not simply a ground rod beside a pool. It connects specified conductive parts in and around the pool environment to reduce voltage differences. Pool pumps, heaters, lighting, GFCI protection, disconnects and bonding must be evaluated as one specialized Article 680 system.
When to call for an evaluation
Consider a grounding and bonding review after a panel or service change, water-line replacement, detached-building project, inspection finding, insurance request, evidence of corrosion, ungrounded-outlet concern, shock or tingle complaint, or undocumented electrical alterations.

What is the simplest difference between grounding and bonding?

Is a ground rod supposed to trip a breaker?

Can a plug-in outlet tester verify my whole grounding system?
No. It can identify certain receptacle conditions, but it does not inspect electrodes, service bonding, piping bonds, downstream neutral-ground separation or every connection on the circuit.
