GFCI and AFCI protection solve different problems
Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection focuses on shock risk. It monitors current flowing out and back and opens the circuit when it detects an imbalance that can indicate current taking an unintended path.
Arc-fault circuit-interrupter protection focuses on fire risk from certain arcing conditions in branch-circuit wiring, cords and connected equipment. A standard breaker, GFCI and AFCI do not perform the same job, even when one device combines more than one function.
Key distinctions
These terms and functions often appear together, but treating them as interchangeable can lead to the wrong repair or project plan.

- Line/load reversal, missing power or incorrect downstream protection
- Heat, discoloration, buzzing or a burning odor at a device or panel
- A three-prong receptacle installed where no equipment ground exists

Are GFCI and AFCI protection the same?
No. GFCI protection addresses current leakage and shock risk. AFCI protection responds to specified arcing characteristics associated with electrical fire risk.
Can one breaker provide both functions?
A listed dual-function breaker can provide both AFCI and GFCI protection when it is compatible with the panel and circuit. The actual wiring configuration still needs evaluation.
Why does a new protective device keep tripping?
The device may be detecting a wiring, load, moisture, neutral or equipment problem. Repeated trips require diagnosis; replacing protection without confirming the cause can leave the fault in place.
Does a GFCI make an ungrounded outlet grounded?
No. An allowed GFCI-based replacement method can improve shock protection, but it does not create an equipment ground and requires the applicable labeling.
