Why an ungrounded outlet matters

The equipment-grounding path helps carry fault current so protective equipment can operate. Older two-wire branch circuits may not contain that path, even when a three-prong receptacle has been installed.

A three-slot face, a plug-in tester reading or a nearby ground rod does not by itself prove that an effective equipment ground reaches the outlet.

Correction options depend on the circuit

After evaluating the wiring method, box, circuit protection and accessible path, Landmark can explain which options are appropriate. The best long-term solution is often to install a grounding conductor or replace the circuit wiring, but the adopted code also permits certain GFCI-based replacement methods when installed and labeled correctly.

A GFCI improves shock protection but does not create a ground

GFCI protection monitors current imbalance and can open the circuit quickly when current leaves the intended path. It does not add an equipment-grounding conductor to an older two-wire circuit.

That distinction matters for surge protectors, sensitive equipment, devices that rely on an equipment ground and future troubleshooting. Landmark explains both the permitted installation and its limitations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a two-prong outlet with a three-prong outlet?

Only when the replacement method is permitted for the existing circuit. Installing a three-prong device without an equipment ground or an allowed GFCI-based method can create a misleading and unsafe condition.

Does a GFCI make an old outlet grounded?

No. A properly installed GFCI can provide an allowed form of personnel protection, but it does not create an equipment-grounding conductor. Required labeling communicates that limitation.

Do all outlets need to be rewired?
