Whole-Home Surge Protection Guide

Whole-home surge protection limits transient overvoltage before it spreads through a home's electrical system. It supports layered protection, but it cannot correct sustained voltage problems, defective wiring or every direct lightning event.

Whole-home surge protection is one layer of electrical risk reduction

A surge protective device diverts or limits a brief voltage spike at the service or distribution point where electricians install it. Short conductor routing, a suitable connection point and a sound grounding and bonding system all affect the installation.

Surges can originate outside or inside the home. Utility switching, storms and faults can contribute, while motors and other loads can produce smaller switching transients. A panel-level device works with point-of-use protection for sensitive equipment rather than replacing it.
