Portable Generator Inlet & Interlock Installation

Landmark Electric installs code-compliant portable-generator inlets, dedicated breakers and listed panel interlocks so a compatible portable generator can supply selected household circuits without unsafe backfeeding.

Flexible payment options

Financing is available for qualifying electrical projects.

Landmark works with independent finance companies to offer qualified customers a range of payment-plan options. Review the available providers and continue through the provider you choose.

A safe connection prevents utility and generator power from being connected together

A portable generator must not energize household wiring through a receptacle or improvised double-ended cord. That practice can energize conductors unexpectedly, expose utility workers and occupants to electrocution and damage the generator or building equipment.

A properly selected inlet, dedicated breaker and listed interlock create a controlled connection method. The interlock prevents the generator breaker and utility main from being on at the same time when it is installed on a compatible panel and used correctly.

  • Exterior or project-appropriate generator inlet
  • Compatible dedicated generator breaker
  • Listed interlock for the specific panel configuration
  • Approved generator cord and connection rating when included
  • Circuit and operating labels
  • Basic transfer and shutdown instruction

Generator capacity and circuit selection still matter

The inlet rating does not guarantee that the portable generator can operate every circuit in the panel. The homeowner must manage connected loads within the generator's running and starting capability and follow the generator manufacturer's operating instructions.

Large motors, electric heat, central air conditioning, ranges, dryers and other high-demand loads may exceed the portable generator or require a different backup-power plan. Landmark reviews the proposed equipment and intended loads before finalizing the connection.

Outdoor operation and carbon-monoxide safety remain the owner's responsibility

Portable generators must be operated outdoors in accordance with the manufacturer instructions and current safety guidance, away from doors, windows and vents. They should never operate in a house, garage, basement, shed or another enclosed or partially enclosed space.

The electrical installation provides an approved connection point; it does not make an unsafe generator location or damaged customer-supplied generator safe. Fuel handling, placement, ventilation and routine generator maintenance remain essential every time the equipment is used.

Codes and standards that apply

These references explain the framework for this work. The adopted code, Michigan amendments, local authority, utility rules, equipment listings and manufacturer instructions must be considered together for the actual installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plug a portable generator into a dryer outlet?

No. Backfeeding through a receptacle or double-ended cord is unsafe. Landmark installs an approved inlet and transfer or listed interlock method designed for the panel and generator connection.

Will an interlock let my portable generator run the entire house?

It allows selected panel circuits to be supplied, but the generator's running and starting capacity still limits what can operate at one time. The homeowner must manage loads within the equipment rating.

Can Landmark install an interlock on any electrical panel?

No. The panel must have a compatible listed interlock arrangement, suitable breaker location and acceptable condition. Otherwise, another transfer method or panel work may be required.

What your service visit includes

Your $79 dispatch and evaluation charge covers sending an electrical professional to your property and the initial on-site evaluation. During that evaluation, the electrician examines the relevant accessible system, shows or explains the supported findings and identifies the cause when the available evidence reasonably allows. Clear, flat-rate options are presented before approved work begins, and the charge is waived when you proceed with approved work during the visit. Any special access, extended diagnosis, permit or after-hours considerations are explained before work moves forward.

Local. Licensed. Ready.

Clear electrical options start with a careful evaluation.
